Not long ago, I was chatting with a friend when we drifted into an unexpectedly interesting question. We asked each other:
“Do you currently have someone you truly admire…like someone who could count as a life role model?”
I paused and thought. A few faces came to mind.
They differed in profession, age, and position in life, yet they shared one clear common trait:
Each of them hold a definite ultimate direction in their lives.
That direction is not always grand or world-changing. Sometimes it is simply about completing one or two personal projects.
But the key is not the size or prestige of the goal. The key is that they genuinely recognize it as their own, and are willing to walk toward it step by step.
Not because society tells them that this is what “success” looks like.
Not to win their parents or anyone’s nods at dinner.
Not to pad a LinkedIn profile with shiny bullet points.
But simply because —
it is what they themselves want to do.
I love watching someone talk about what they truly care about: the way their eyes light up, their voice cracks a little, their whole face softens…
That spark, simple yet steady, always makes me think from the bottom of my heart:
“God…this person is truly alive…”
For a long time in the past, I didn’t have anyone like that to look up to.
Sure, I admired many people and sincerely respected their abilities and qualities. But I never once thought, yeah, I want to live like that.
It wasn’t until I found my way back to reading and writing, and started putting my thoughts out there. For real that something inside me began to shift.
Through books and podcasts, I stumbled upon more and more creators, people who weren’t necessarily famous, but who were clearly doing their thing with conviction.
Watching them move forward, fail, adjust, and still keep shining through their own stories hit me harder than I expected.
Without noticing it, my inner reference points gradually increased.
The outline of who I want to become slowly came into focus and I also realized that…
Having a role model isn’t about copying someone else’s highlight reel. It’s about remembering, especially when you’re lost or second-guessing everything, that the path itself doesn’t matter as much as this:
staying brutally honest with yourself.
New year or not, nobody’s coming to hand you your direction on a silver platter. If you’ve got a North Star, even it’s messy, half-formed, start walking toward it.
Clumsy steps count. Doubt is allowed. Detours are guaranteed.
And if you don’t have one yet, that’s fine too. Your only real job is to keep looking honestly, paying attention to what actually moves you, not what impresses people, not what looks good on Instagram.
This might be the year you find it. And if you do, don’t just admire it from a distance.
Take action.
